creative commons

The closing of the Parksley nursing home has caused two members of the Accomack County Board of Supervisors to call for a special meeting on Monday.

It will be held at the Metompkin Elementary School in Parksley.

89 long-term residents and 128 employees will be affected by the closure.

Board member Harrison Phillips told the Salisbury Daily Times that there were not many places where local residents could be placed in the area.

Parksley Mayor James Eichelberger told the paper that for those who have family in the area he wondered where they would go.

Riverside Health System says the facility is being shut down because of water problems with the building.

Riverside says it is looking to help the residents find other facilities including some on the Maryland Eastern Shore.

Bill Downey, president and chief executive officer of Riverside said that the building had just become too antiquated.
