AAA Mid-Atlantic Opposes Governor's Gas Tax Hike

AAA Mid-Atlantic says it cannot support Governor Martin O’Malley’s proposed 6 percent tax hike on gasoline, unless there is a constitutional amendment that would ensure the increased revenue goes to the needs of the state transportation system.

The automobile association said that the protections in the bill to prevent the use of these funds for other purposes are too weak, adding that the Trust Fund has already seen borrowing for expenditures unrelated transportation.

The automobile association noted that once fully implemented the legislation could add as much as 18 to 20 cents a gallon at today’s current prices.

Currently, the average price for a gallon of gas in Maryland is $3.83 – a 12 cent increase from just a week ago.
