DINWIDDIE, Va. (AP) - Officials in Dinwiddie County say an eighth grade student has been taken into custody after he brought a gun to school.

Media outlets report Dinwiddie County Sheriff's Office spokesman Maj. William Knott says other students saw the 14-year-old with the weapon Thursday morning at Dinwiddie Middle School and immediately notified teachers and administrators.

Deputies searched the teenager and say they found him with the unloaded gun and ammunition.

The student was taken into custody at a juvenile detention center.

School officials said an automated call was sent out to parents informing them of the incident.

Officials say the situation was under control and didn't warrant a lock down.

It is unclear why the student brought the weapon to school.

Charges have not yet been released.
