23 Environmentalists Arrested Outside Virginia Governor's Mansion

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Twenty-three environmental activists are facing misdemeanor trespassing charges after holding a protest outside Gov. Terry McAuliffe's mansion.

The activists were on the final day of a three-day protest calling on McAuliffe to oppose proposed natural gas pipelines and push for stricter state requirements related to disposing coal waste byproduct.

They were cited with trespassing Wednesday after blocking the gate to the governor's mansion.

McAuliffe, a Democrat, relied heavily on the environmental community in his successful 2013 gubernatorial bid. But environmental groups have been split on his tenure, with some saying he's been too cozy with energy giant Dominion Resources.
