CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) - A new study says about a third of Virginia children are living in or near poverty.

The study says 13 percent of children lived in poverty in 2011, the most recent year of analysis. Another 18-and-a-half percent lived in near-poverty.

According to the study, almost half of the children in or near poverty live with parents who are married.

The study was conducted by University of Virginia researchers with the Weldon Cooper Center for Public Service's Demographic Research Group.

One researcher says many anti-poverty programs target single-parent families. She says a wide range of policy and program options benefiting all children should be considered.
