NORFOLK, Va. (AP) - More than 1,000 shipyard workers are projected to be out of work in the coming weeks.
The Virginian-Pilotreports that layoffs are sweeping the region's shipyards and subcontractors.
They're tied to the stop-gap budget measure that Washington was operating under for several months. It led to a kind of hiccup in the awarding of new Navy contracts for ship-repair work.
Local yards say there currently isn't enough work to do. For instance, work on three vessels was set to start in April. It was then delayed to June and is now slated to start in mid-August.
