$10 Million Grant for Renovating Port of Wilmington

WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) - The Diamond State Port Corp. has won a $10 million grant that will help renovate two aging Port of Wilmington berths.

Port Executive Director Gene Bailey says the U.S. Department of Transportation grant allows for the renovation of two berths that date back to the opening of the port.

The berths are used for unloading fruit from Pacific Seaways and loading and unloading juice, livestock and other cargoes. Bailey says the berths have been renovated since 1923 and can withstand the current workload, but they are showing some wear.

The rehabilitation will cost $13.4 million, including $3.4 million from capital funds allocated by the state bond bill. The corporation
